I was inspired by the harlequin pattern of repeating diamonds, and the Baroque–style decoration on Venetian masks. Unlike the diamonds design to attract attention with brilliant sparkle, these are ones a girl can hide behind, should the need arise. Silk shading and metal thread.

When considering the theme of this challenge I was struck by the idea that all “girls” no matter their age have a best friend or two that are absolute diamonds. They are with us through the good times and the bad, they shine and make us smile. That was the starting point of this piece of work.

Intrigued by the complex wiring in the markets of India. I decided to reverse the bright colours of the crowded markets and the grey of the wiring.

Original idea was a range of building roofs, not the idea of one building but a complex of people going about their day appealed more. The musicians are based on the lockdown practice of people entertaining their neighbours.

A sunset is a complex mix of Rayleigh function, ozone absorption and light scatter. Massive trees grow by absorbing carbon dioxide and water. Volcanoes are formed by magma forcing itself to the surface. Complexity is all around us.

I am interested in the complex and common fears which result in good luck, signs and amulets in all cultures. This blue eye is designed to ward off “The Evil Eye”, blue being a powerful colour, the metal reflecting the evil back at itself.
