THE STORY BEHIND THE QUILT

(from October 2025's Threads magazine):

Embroiderers in the Taranaki/Wanganui/Manawatū region are feeling justly proud of their work creating a one-off hand-embroidered quilt. The quilt (pictured on a queen size bed) measures 190x203cm (75x80 inches) and has an impressive 182 hand-embroidered squares making up the patchworked surface.
In the last year, members from New Plymouth, Central Taranaki, South Taranaki, Opunake, Wanganui and Manawatu Guilds have between them created more than 200 hand-embroidered, six-inch squares in ecru or white with a general theme of flowers and leaves – the leftover squares have been made up into complementary cushions.
The quilt was started as something special for all guilds to contribute to as the region worked towards hosting conference in Palmerston North next year. The beautiful quilt valued at $2000 will be raffled with all proceeds going towards the cost of Conference. The cushions will be included as second prize (pictures will be loaded soon).
Some members may remember that a similar quilt and cushions were created for New Plymouth Conference in 2016 and the finished quilt so well-received that it was felt time to put members’ embroidery skills to on show again in a new quilt. A wide range of embroidery techniques have been included, such as surface stitchery, Hardanger, appliqué, Casalguidi, Schwalm, drawn thread and beading.
Gloria Campbell, the TWM regional rep, took on the task of piecing the squares together and creating a manipulated fabric border for the edge – which also meant Gloria created four more small embroideries to finish the corners. Once it was batted and backed, it was then quilted by Aimee of Aimee’s Homestead Quilts. The quilting was kept minimal to avoid reducing the effect of the embroidery.
